I loved this.
Agents/ publishing houses reject books without reading/ understanding them. It's usually a bored intern who throws out stuff from the slush pile. Animal Farm was rejected because there wasn't at that time a market for books about animals.

Two thumbs up, Margaret!

Lara and your "Virtual Ink" seminar was very enlightening.

One additional point - EVEN IF your work is accepted in NY by a "major" publishing house/imprint your PR budget as a "new" unproven writer is minimal. So you have to do your own PR work anyway. Set up your own website etc. So, except for the prestige, in effect you're on your own anyway. However, you do get to share ALL your efforts with the publisher.

This blog post tells it exactly as it is!! Too many people shy away from self-publishing and busting some of the myths mentioned is a step in the right direction.

And, speaking of steps - the journey of 1000 miles begins with just one step, and I'll add, a commitment to yourself and a respect for your work!!

I know. I'm one of the ones who have been to NY editors and agents at least three times with my completed "motivational fiction" and told various forms of no. If I had to choose between having a publisher or the self-published book I have in my hands at this moment - I choose this book hands down. Designing the physicals for this book was one of the most satisfying things I have ever done.

Great idea, Jaye. I often barter editing services with other writers. It not only gets our manuscripts in shape, it hones our writing and critiquing skills. Win-win.

Excellent article, Margaret.

Might I add something to number 4? Barter. Many writers are skilled editors. Some are excellent copy writers. Sure, barter is messy, but if writers want tidy lives, they can go to work in an office or a factory. Writers can make deals with cover artists, too, exchanging their writing skills for artwork, typography and layout. It takes time and effort, but very little out of pocket expense. The added benefit is it helps build and solidify a community of people invested in each others work.
